I do not like going to the dentist. It has become almost unbearable ever since I struggled with anxiety. For me it is not the actual work the dentist does that causes me anxiety (I have a high pain tolerance), it is the fact that I cannot swallow or breathe. This is what causes me anxiety...the fact that you have your mouth open for so long and you cannot swallow and breathing is much more difficult sends me into a panic attack. It really is terrible.
I know people that love to go to the dentist...they actually fall asleep in the dentist chair (how is this possible?).
Here is why I hate going to the dentist:
- coffee breath (our old dentist had terrible coffee breath...it was awful)
- bright lights (with my anxiety, bright lights make it worse)
- it hurts (my teeth have become very sensitive near the gum line)
- drilling sound (I hate that sound so much)
- have to hold mouth open too long
- I cannot swallow or breathe very easily (this is already an issue I have with anxiety)
- it takes too long (holding my mouth open for so long and not being able to breathe or swallow is awful...it needs to be done quicker)

I too have wondered why a dentist asks questions when one knows a verbal response is not possible.
