Jar's emergency appendectomy

Wow! What a crazy time it was on Tuesday, December 18th and Wednesday, December 19th. Jar had stomach pains all day on Tuesday and really bad stomach pains that night and through the night. Finally at 4:30 I got Michael up because I did not know if we should take Jar to the Emergency Room. We just did not know. Michael decided to go to work at 5:30 a.m., and I would just see how Jar felt in the morning. Jar and I woke up at 9:30 after a very rough night, and he was still in pain. So, I immediately called the doctor's office to get him an appointment. I had to update all of his information first, so finally at around 10:00 I was given the appointment time of 11:00. I had to rush to get a whole bunch of things done (take Zena out, have Lily go pee, put Lily away, get ready, pack a bag of things to do for myself, etc.) When we got to the doctor, Doctor Jennifer Muller checked him and said she thought it was his appendix and immediately ordered blood tests and a CAT scan. We went to the hospital to get his blood tests, back to the doctor's office to get permission from Insurance for his CAT scan, then back to the hospital to have a CAT scan, where we had to wait for an hour after he drank the drink to have the CAT scan. We went home after the CAT scan to wait for the doctor to call us with the results. I thought it was going to be a couple of hours, so I changed into comfy clothes. Well, just as soon as I had changed into my comfy clothes, Jar got the call from Dr. Muller that he needed to go the the Emergency Room immediately for an emergency appendectomy. I had just put bread in the toaster to make Jar some toast...as he had not eaten anything yet that day, and it was 1:30. I rushed to get dressed, take the dogs out to pee, put Lily away again, pack a bag for myself, grab some water and a protein bar because I had not eaten either. (good thing Jar had not eaten at all yet)

We left as soon as possible to go the ER. It was probably 15 minutes or so. We waited in the ER for probably an hour or so before we went back to an ER patient room. We stayed there for another hour or so, while many doctors came in to check him, record things on the computer, do an ultrasound, get him somewhat prepped for surgery with an IV being put in his arm. Michael helped him change out of his clothes into a hospital gown. (I am sure that was somewhat embarrassing to Jar...him always being all put-together and such) Every doctor that came in asked him his name, birth date, and what he was there for (I thought they did a really good job making sure that he was going to have done what he came in there to have done). At 4:00 or so we all went to the surgery center (Jar was wheeled in the hospital bed). There he was given a cap for his head, a toothbrush to clean his teeth and mouth, and some medicine in prep for surgery. We said our goodbyes to Jar at 4:15 or so and went to wait in the waiting room while he had his surgery.

Michael and I sat in the surgery center waiting room...very quiet and no one there. We talked for a while and then had some phone calls with family. Finally at 5:15 or so the doctor (Dr. Tracy Taggart) came to let us know that the surgery had been successful and that it had been really infected and large (largest one they had ever seen...which is what all the other doctors and technicians said as well). She said that another day, and it could have ruptured. She said that a nurse would come get us when he was awake, and we could go to the recovery room.

Michael decided to go get us something to eat, because all I had to eat was a protein bar at 2:30. I was hungry. Just 10 minutes or so after he left, a nurse came and told me I could go to Jar's room now...that he was awake. I went to Jar's room...he was pretty quiet and tired, but he kept his eyes open as much as he could. Michael came with the food (McDonald's) at 6:15 and then had to turn around again to go to Safeway Pharmacy to get Jar's medicine before it closed at 7:00. When Michael got back at 7:30, we watched some TV...Jeopardy. Jar had to do a walk around the surgery center and go to the bathroom before we could go home. Around 8:30 we finally were able to head home. We were all very glad and very very tired. Jar was also very hungry. He started with a bowl of jello, pudding, and greek yogurt and then he also had two pieces of toast (he had not eaten anything at all up to this point).

Jar was not very sore that night because he had plenty of pain medicine in him from the surgery. He was able to sleep in his bed all night, which was good. The next few days he was in quite a bit of pain and had to take Aleve a few times a day. I also picked up Arnika Montana for him from the health store which helps with bruising and muscle recovery. I also got him a throat spray from the health store, cause he had a scrape from the tube down his throat.

He was given strict orders not to do any lifting over 10 lbs. for three weeks, so he got a long vacation from work. Elise was great and really worked with Jar. He had to take off 4 weeks of working out in the garage gym. Poor Jar!

We had his follow-up at the surgery clinic on Wednesday, January 2. The doctor said everything looked great and that he could go back to work on January 14. He is not to do any ab exercises for another month (so as not to get a hernia). I know that he is very eager to get back to working out in the garage. He has missed it for sure.

We are very glad that we caught the infected appendix in time, and we are very glad for his successful surgery and speedy recovery.

My favorite shoe growing up

My favorite shoe growing up though was my bare feet. I was almost always barefoot. I cannot tell you how many bee stings and splinters I got in my feet growing up...tons for sure. I grew up in the country...I just liked walking barefoot way better than with shoes. Obviously, I wore shoes when I went somewhere, but when I was home, I was in my bare feet.

Mama loved being barefoot as a child and kicked her shoes off all her life. Remember to keep yourself grounded when your world runs amuck.

Bare feet & river water....good for the soul

bare feet - this reminds me of the river rocks at the camp we went to every summer of my life

...we had a rock driveway when I was growing up. I got so used to walking on the rocks in the driveway that it did not even hurt my feet. Friends would come over and not even be able to walk on the rocks barefoot.  One of the joys of growing up in the country.

My favorite shoes growing up

...there were some shoes that I had when I was growing up that were my absolute favorites. I owned some saddle shoes, a pair of clogs, and quite a few pairs of jelly shoes. I loved all of these so much. I probably wore the clogs and the jelly's the most though.

I did NOT like my saddle shoes at. all. because I HAD to wear them... they were the only shoes that my orthotics would fit in.

Jelly Shoes - To this day I heart jellys!

On Sale

Ever since I can remember, I have been all about the deal I could get. I have always loved yard sales, thrift stores, Goodwill Stores, and the sales aisles. I have always used whatever coupons I could find. I love to get a good deal. But...sometimes it has become all about the deal. If it was on sale, I might still buy it even if I had 6 bottles of that same cleaner at home; even if I had 10 other pair of yoga pants at home.

In the past I have bought things for the house just because they were a good deal, not necessarily because I absolutely loved them and had a place for them. I am now saving the money until I have enough to buy what I really want (like living room and dining room furniture). I have learned the hard way that buying what is cheap or a really good deal does not make for a good buy all of the time.

Lately, I have become more about the minimal lifestyle. I am nearing 50, so I know what I like...I am using what I have now until I buy new stuff. It helps me not have to store as much stuff as well.

Just because something is on sale doesn't mean you have to buy it so you think you saved a bunch of money.

Change

CHANGE...probably the hardest thing for most people to do.

There are so many different changes we experience in life...change of jobs, change of where we live, change of churches, change of hairstyle, change of our children in different stages, and so much more.

I am a person that does not really love change. This basically comes from how I grew up. I always lived in the same house, went to the same school and church, had the same friends, went to the same places, and did the same things. Change did not really happen for me until I graduated from high school. My first big change came my first year of college. I was so excited for college...what I did not anticipate was that I was a homebody much more that I ever thought, and I did not really enjoy change much. It took me a while to find my place. My next change was when I switched colleges. This time I had my sister, so that helped me somewhat. I went on staff at that same college a year later, and I really found my groove there. I began to really enjoy it.

My next big change was getting married and sharing a space with another person...a man at that. That was a huge change. I had brothers growing up, but they were never really in my space. It took some adjusting living with Michael...and I'm sure him with me as well. After three years we welcomed our first baby...now that was a big change. We certainly grew up a lot during that first year with Cam.

There were many many changes after that:
  • moving to a new house
  • finding our place in a church
  • having another baby
  • homeschooling the boys
  • leaving our church
  • having a miscarriage
  • losing Michael's dad
  • moving to another state
  • Michael starting a new job
  • finding a new church
  • homeschooling in another state
  • losing Gma Joseph
  • moving to another state with no job
  • Michael starting a new job
  • moving into another house
  • going to a new church
  • homeschooling in another state
  • Michael traveling a lot
  • trying other churches
  • Michael losing his job
  • Michael getting a new job
  • changing churches
  • Cam starting college
  • Michael losing a second job
  • both boys driving
  • losing my dad
  • Michael getting a new job
WOW! I am exhausted. These were a lot of changes. Changes are actually in most cases really good for us. They don't seem like it in that moment, but when we look back we can see pretty clearly how those changes got us to where we are today...and it was a good thing. All of these changes above brought us to where we are today, and I am pretty content and happy with the outcome. Yes, I still miss many things about where we were in some of the other stages, but I know that we are where we are for a reason. I can truly look back and see all of the changes for good that have happened.

I still don't love change. I am a person that does quite well with the same...it makes me feel happy and secure. Funny thing is I am married to a person that craves change and gets bored in the mundane and the same. I am very happy to sit at home in cozy pj's with some coffee and a good book or movie, and he would love to go out and catch a nice dinner and a movie at the theater.

Here are a couple of quotes that I love about change:

CHANGE we can believe in... Our presidents motto... Problem is eventually all who really believe this change is for the better will soon find out they been duped, lied to, deceived and brought to nothing. Wait... And see for yourself.

If you want something to change, it has to change in YOU first.

It's not going to be easy. It's going to be worth it. #strengthisinthestruggle #sweatwithsoul

I was terrified when I was told I would be laid off from a job that I love. And now, I'm so excited to be starting something new and better suited to me.

Moving Mom

Well, we finally got Mom's stuff moved into storage yesterday. This is a really exciting time. This is a difficult thing for her, but I really do believe in the end, when we look back, we are going to see what a great thing this is for her. She will be living with Kyle for now, and then we will see what happens.

I am really excited for her to downsize and simplify her life. I really hope that she embraces this and that she embraces this new chapter in her life. I think downsizing and simplifying her life will allow her to just enjoy life instead of always having to take care of things...her house, her stuff, and her property. I am excited for her. She has done some downsizing already, but we have a long way to go. It will just be nice for her to have less stuff to take care of and keep clean. That is a good thing...in my opinion.

Here are photos from the move:
