Contentment

I have been thinking a lot lately about being content with what we have and not constantly thinking on what we would like to have.

Recently, houses in our neighborhood have been selling like hot cakes. And our neighbors are moving into bigger houses with more property...with larger mortgages. So, Michael and I started thinking about how great it would be to get into a bigger better house. Why? What was wrong with the house we were in? Did we really need a bigger house?

It is so easy to get caught up in wanting more...wanting the nicer and bigger house, the nicer and newer car. When we see what other people have, we want that too. We find ourselves not being happy and content with what we have. I think social media...like YouTube and Instagram and Pinterest... has not helped this at all.

I like to watch Tiny Houses on HGTV. I like this concept because one is not focused on the bigger and the better and having lots of stuff. The focus is on living life and having adventure. I like this.

I still remember something I heard a few years ago, "The more you have, the more you have to take care of." Another quote I heard was, "The smaller the house, the greater the adventure." These are very true. I don't want a mortgage so large that I cannot enjoy life. I want to be able to do things without having to say every time, "We don't have money for that." OR even worse, going into debt to do these things.

Michael and I decided to get our finances in order and try to get things paid off. We have a few things on the house that we need to do...like hard wood floors and living room furniture and shower tiles and shower door. Then we would like to possibly get an above-ground pool. We will do these things over the next little while, when we have the money.

Meanwhile, we would like to enjoy life...like hiking and biking and small trips here and there and movies at the theater and trips to the coast and much much more. I don't want to be so strapped financially with a larger house that we cannot even enjoy the house.

I love our house...it is perfect for us. Do I sometimes want for a house with a larger kitchen and an island and maybe a walk-in closet and more property? Yes, I do. But, then I have to take care of that larger house and larger property. And right now in my life, I just don't want to spend all of my time doing that. I am content with what I have.

The secret to being content in life? Not being concerned with what you do or do not have, but appreciate the moments you have been given.:
