Project Car

So, we purchased a car for the boys to work on with Michael. We started looking in February, and then the first week in March the boys finally picked a style that they wanted to do (we had a very small budget, so a lot of car makes were out due to too much money). They chose the Mercury Comet, but after doing more research, they realized that the Ford Maverick was a sportier version. We found 3 cars in the area, but they were only able to see two of them. The first one was a green 1974 Ford Maverick. The second one was a white 1970 Ford Maverick.  They loved this last one. This one did not have anything under the hood. However, in talking to the owner (a farmer with 3 teenage sons of his own), he also had a 1973 Mercury Comet that he would sell with the Maverick as a combo deal. The Mercury Comet runs, and its parts are interchangeable with the Ford Maverick. We went home and thought about it, talked about it, researched it, and decided to buy both of them as a combo. We got both cars for the same price as the 1974 Ford Maverick was listed--and the cars we got are in better shape.

So, a Saturday in March we rented a car carrier from UHaul and picked up the cars. We now have a very full driveway. We got the cars titled, and then we moved the Ford Maverick into the back yard (into the pool spot). The boys will tear apart the Mercury Comet (which has a factory 302 motor), piece by piece, and we will scrap whatever is left. We bought a storage shed to put the car parts into until we get them put on the Maverick.

We do crazy things--this is just another one of them. I am excited for the boys to learn about cars this way though. It will be so good for them--and give them a good sense of a huge project accomplishment.

Here is the first car that they looked at: (1974 Ford Maverick)

Now, the rest are photos of when we picked up the cars and took them home. The boys were so excited, because it was not a reality to them until they were sitting in our driveway.

We bought these from the perfect people too--a farmer who has 3 teenage sons of his own. They are also working on project cars for the father and his three sons. These cars came free to him with a car purchase that he had made (that is why he could sell them so cheap). They all helped us move these on to the trailer.

What is always the neatest thing to me is how God works everything out, and a lot of times it is even better than you planned it to be. We had not planned to buy two cars and use one of them as parts. God knew better for us. This was a perfect deal for us and at an unbelievable price. Thank you God for again taking care of the details for us and for giving us way more than we asked.
